Great White Sun Attack

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008
The greatest danger to surfers in the water?

The greatest danger to surfers in the water?

Ask a surfer what his/her greatest fear is when out in the water, and you will undoubtedly get the response, “Getting eaten by a shark”. A close second, drowning. Few will mention what is fast becoming their biggest threat, “The great white sun attack!”

Yes, the sun is the number one health risk surfers face today. Skin cancer has increased in young adults under thirty at an alarming rate. This shark in the sky is taking a bite out of surfers skin with every surf session. Like sitting ducks, unsuspecting surfers bask under this beast called the sun every day. How to fight back? Below are some simple suggestions to prevent getting swallowed by the great white sun.

Get barreled. Yes, nothing is better than getting out of the sun by being in the pit. Drop in, bottom turn, stall, drag the hand for style points, knowing you are hiding from a skin killer.

Wear a rash guard. Surf shirts are excellent great white sun repellants. These durable, stylish, and SPF 150+ shirts for surfing are made from lycra. Online store Thebeachdepot.com has a large selection of affordable rash guards for men, women, kids and toddler groms. Many people (in America’s heartland) wear these shirts to night clubs, restaurants, even the grocery store. Yes, this shark attacks on land too. Make a rash guard your repellant from the sun.

Cover your face with Zinka, sunglasses and a hat. Think of yourself like a warrior getting ready for battle. Because that’s what you are, a wave warrior dude. The sun declared war when it preemptively struck your skin with its UV rays of mass skin destruction. Send a message right back with “Operation Cover Your Noggin.” Bullfrog, Headhunter, Zinka, or Neutrogena are great sunscreens for your face. All the surf companies now have some pretty sick hats that stay on while you surf. And seriously, even thought you may look like a kook, start wearing sunglasses made for surfing. As a surfer, you are getting double exposure from the sun’s reflection off the water. This means that by your thirties, you will have the skin and eyes of a senior citizen without protecting your precious skin. What a bummer! Protection now will pay off later!

Do you feel prepared? I hope so. Make these weapons a part of your surfing arsenal so you can stay stoked for year to come!
